Historic Buildings of Antioch College, Yellow Springs
The recent decision by Trustees of Antioch College to close that institution has also resulted in the distinct possibility that Antioch's collection of historic buildings may soon face the impact of the shut down of the campus power plant. According to recent quotes obtained by the Yellow Springs News (see article link below), this could take place as soon as July 1, and no information is available as to whether or not the buildings will be properly mothballed to minimize damage.
The campus of Antioch in Yellow Springs includes a handful of buildngs which date as far back as 1853, including Antioch Hall (pictured at left).
Preservation Ohio will closely monitor this situation and report on any developments on this site.

Thank you so much for your attention. Those of us who have been struggling for a year to undo the short-sighted decision of the chancellor to develop the Yellow Springs campus as residential housing (in order to finance out-of-state building projects for the University) are deeply, deeply distressed about the fate of Antioch's historic buildings. Main Building was the tallest building west of the Mississippi when it was built, and is an icon for generations of Antioch graduates.
There is an Antioch University board of trustees meeting in Keene, NH, on June 5th, where recommendations will be discussed. If events of the last year are any indication, the strategy will be to neglect the campus until the degree of deterioration mandates/justifies bulldozing. The chancellor is using a venture capitalist model of asset management/liquidation, and on numerous occasions has publicly expressed her disdain for the College and its legacy.
If your organization could send a letter to the board discussing your concerns this would be be very helpful at this juncture.
Here is the agenda item:
Thursday, June 5
10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Physical Facilities - Room 1C
Stanley Report on College Facilities, New Facilities for ANE & AUSB
Please email me for contact info.
